Chasing happiness seems to be a big part of our ‘must have’ culture today, and people spend a life time chasing it.
Some people spend a life time chasing happiness, only to think they have got there and to ask the question, “Is this what it’s all about? Is this all there is?”
So what if I was to tell you that chasing happiness has been found to make people unhappy and it is far healthier to find meaning in your life. Meaning gives far more purpose to your life, leaving you full-filled and making you feel better about yourself. In my opinion there are four pillars to a meaningful life, and if we can find them and practise them it will improve your life and make you more content.
1) Belonging. We all need to feel a sense of belonging: to loved ones, to friends, to family, to something. Belonging makes us feel loved, a part of something bigger than us and helps us find connection in life.
2) Purpose. We all need a sense of purpose in our lives – a reason to get out of bed. For a lot of people that will come from work, but a sense of purpose can be found in many other things; you just need to find what works for you!
3) Transcendence. We all need connection to something that is higher than ourselves. For some this could be God and religion, but that doesn’t have to be; and a connection with nature, or something spiritual would also work. We all need to believe there is something watching out for us and guiding us
4) Stories. We all tell ourselves stories every day in our lives. We believe those stories, and they influence our lives and make us live the lives we do. We create the stories we tell ourselves; we don’t have to believe them.
Belonging, purpose, transcendence and stories; in my opinion these are the building blocks to a more fulfilled life, and therefore a more contented one.
Are you chasing happiness?
Why not work on any of these 4 pillars and see where it takes you!
