One of the things that is particularly successful with is addiction, and smoking is an unsociable addiction. When I work with people who smoke, the issue is very rarely the smoking; the issue is usually deeply rooted in some emotional connection that could easily go back to child hood. It may well stem from the group we hung out with in the Bike Sheds, or being part of the ‘cool group’ at school.
The thing we don’t realise, or understand, with smoking is that the seemingly insignificant incident way back in childhood made us form a relationship, a friendship, that was going to control us for the rest of our life. Smoking pretends to be our friend, our ally, our confidant; someone we can turn to when we are in a corner and all else has failed.
My question to you would be, ‘How many friends do you have who would help you to shorten your life – six minutes for every cigarette you smoke – and pollute your lungs – covering them with black tar – and leaving you feeling breathless, and struggling to carry out even the most basic physical exercise.
Smoking was never your friend; it lied to you, tricked you, got your trust and then went on to abuse you and your body.
